Transitioning back to Lifting after Hernia Surgery

Post by MoscowBarbell »

Had an inguinal hernia repair (mesh) 6 weeks ago. Doctor cleared me for basic activities. How should I rebuild intra-abdominal bracing pressure safely?

Start with standing vacuums and flat dead-bugs. Do not jump straight to 100% Valsalva maneuvers.

Avoid using a lifting belt for the next month. You need to organically re-learn how to stabilize the abdominal wall without mechanical containment.

Keep reps high (15-20 range) with ultra-light weight. Avoid heavy grindy reps where pressure spikes exponentially.

Listen closely to any structural pulling or burning sensations near the incision site. Mesh takes time to completely integrate.

Did some bodyweight squats today without bracing hard. Felt a bit weird but no real pain.

Weird is normal. The tissue is scar-mapped now. Just don't push past anything sharp.

Focus on machine work where your torso doesn't have to fight gravity as much (leg extensions, chest press).

Exactly. Isolate legs without straining the midline wall structure.

Give it a solid 12 weeks post-op before attempting anything over 75% intensity.
